In the second half of the thirteenth century, Alfonso X "El Sabio" (the Wise, the Learned), King of Castile and Leon, brought together almost four hundred cantigas (songs to the Virgin Mary), several of which he had composed himself. These are not liturgical pieces but songs of praise, with elements of popular song, plainchant and the art of the Troubadours. They include marching songs (Santa Maria, stela do dia), haunting prayers (Muito faz grand'error) and even exorcism (De toda chaga) and bellicose celebration (Pode por Santa Maria). With sensuousness still redolent of the perfumes of the Orient, they address the Virgin in various forms, the Star, the sorceress, the standard, the Mother. collected and transcribed these melodies from Ladino-speaking communities in Sarajevo, Sofia, Salonika, Smyrna, Jerusalem, and other cities. Beginning in the 1970s, these extraordinary songs were revived (to considerable excitement) for concert audiences--a revival sparked in large part by a 1976 recording by Hesperion XX. This now-legendary early music ensemble, renamed Hesperion XXI for the new century, has returned to the music of the Sephardic Diaspora with this beautifully produced and packaged release. Disc 1 contains eight songs performed lovingly by the magnetic Montserrat Figueras (who sings with an appropriately unstudied tone). The second disc includes eight more melodies performed instrumentally; the choice of instruments reflects the influence of the Muslim-ruled areas where the Sephardim settled with the oud, rebab, and qanun (Middle Eastern equivalents of the lute, fiddle, and dulcimer) performing alongside harps, lutes, flutes, and frame drums. (Inexplicably, however, the final track of this second CD--an improvisation for the sarod and tabla--sounds nice but feels completely foreign to the theme of this release.) It may have been more effective programming to mingle the vocal and instrumental tracks across the two CDs rather than segregating them. --Matthew Westphal

Alfonso X (Toledo, Spain, November 23, 1221 – April 4, 1284 in Seville, Spain) was a Castilian monarch who ruled as the King of Castile, León and Galicia from 1252 until his death. He also was elected King of the Germans (formally King of the Romans) in 1257, though the Papacy prevented his confirmation. He established Castilian as a language of higher learning, founded universities (Salamanca and Toledo) and earned his nicknames "el Sabio" ("the Wise" or "the Learned") and "el Astrólogo" ("the Astronomer") through his own prolific writings, including Galician-Portuguese poetry.
Alfonso X commissioned or co-authored numerous works of music during his reign. These works included Cantigas d'escarnio e maldicer and the vast compilation Cantigas de Santa Maria ("Songs to the Virgin Mary"), which was written in Galician-Portuguese and figures among the most important of his works. The Cantigas form one of the largest collections of vernacular monophonic songs to survive from the Middle Ages. They consist of 420 poems with musical notation. The poems are for the most part on miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary. One of the miracles Alfonso relates is his own healing in Puerto de Santa María.

Although the 13th-century collection of songs known as the Cantigas de Santa Maria, compiled under the sponsorship of Spain's King Alfonso X, is one of the sources most favored by early- music groups, the collection is so vast--more than 400 works--that recordings of this music rarely duplicate repertoire. And because actual performing forces are entirely at the discretion of the individual or ensemble, today's performances are much like they must have been 700 years ago--widely varied in interpretation and in number and types of instruments and voices. The Italian ensemble Micrologus utilizes period instruments and extensive musicological research to inform its interpretive approach; but these also are very imaginative and creative artists, and the resulting performances are truly like nothing you've heard before. Never have these fine songs, which honor the Virgin Mary and relate tales of Marian miracles, been rendered so colorfully and with such irresistibly characterful voicings and instrumental effects. Don't miss this one.

The Cantigas de Santa María by Alfonso X the Wise constitute one of the greatest contributions to the cultural world of the thirteenth century and one of the greatest monuments of Medieval music. Alla Francesca's performance of 17 cantigas has its high and low points. On the one hand are the cantigas performed with voices and instruments, 11 in total, and on the other, those performed instrumentally. Sensibly, the performance avoids reminders of Moslem music, often employed by other groups, and which border on provocation in a repertory devoted to the Virgin. Alla Francesca's Cantigas sound like Medieval monody rooted in the deepest European tradition, which is what they are.
